This season’s must-have skirt trend is a blast from the past, which was made popular in the ’50s. The vintage inspired midi skirt was seen on the runway by The Row in their spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection. I do believe the Olsen twins are the only designers who can make a classic pin-up look reinvented into an effortlessly chic city dweller ensemble. The collection featured long layers to create a bohemian mood, making it clear that fashion is not set in stone. The Row mixed and matched the skirt with both form fitting blouses and loose jackets, perfect for any occasion.
With my pleasure, I am happy to announce that the midi skirt is not only on trend, but that I can also rave about it. First things first, the midi skirt is universally flattering on any shape and size; it is a happy medium between a mini and a maxi and can be styled to suit any body shape. Hint: wear it high-waisted so the skirt can accentuate the thinnest part of your waist to flatter your figure. Not only is it a great piece to have in your closet, it is also an affordable investment. Because this style has been re-born since its original fame in the 1950s, you can find racks of them in your local thrift store for less than a venti latte from Starbucks. If you’re lucky enough, try raiding your grandmother’s closet for some real hidden gems.
Fashion is all about reinventing what is old, and making it new again. In my post this week I took a vintage spin on things, highlighting my midi skirt which I picked up at the Salvation Army for three dollars. To keep my outfit casual I paired it with a studded denim vest, and a pair of red sandals to add some colour to the outfit. Staying with my 50s vibe, I paired a vintage clutch which I purchased from an online vintage clothing store Some Like it Vintage, and a couple rings which I purchased at the Toronto Vintage Clothing Store. This entire ensemble (minus the watch) was purchased for less than thirty dollars; sometimes it’s hard being a fashion student living on a tight budget, but style is what happens when you make it into something of your own. Next time you have a day off, browse your local thrift store, you’ll be surprised with what you find and don’t forget to try on a midi skirt and make it your summer staple!
