STYLE GURU STYLE: Punk and Edgy

What’s great about fashion is that you are able to show your multiple personalities with the change of a shirt or a pair of shoes. Summer is a time to let your personality shine as bright as the summer sun; it might be a time to show a bit of attitude or flair that you don’t necessarily show on a daily basis.

Inspired by Faith Connexion’s resort 2016 collection, I decided to show my punk side through today’s outfit. The collection is made of several casual outfits, illustrated by the sharp contrast between sharp, black fabrics with a soft white, as well as smooth and rough materials. In order to give the runway look my summer casual twist, I decided to style a pair of distressed, ripped jeans with a zebra-striped tank top.

The distressed, ripped jeans in the collection emphasizes add character to the overall look by showing the Fashionista’s punk, edgy side. I decided to roll up the bottoms of my jeans in order to adjust to the hot, summer weather. By rolling up the ends, I am also able to give the illusion of longer legs by showing only my ankles.

In order to add to the punk look, I decided to style my zebra-striped tank top with my jeans. Since the tank top pattern almost resembles the rips in the jeans, but in abstract form, they complement each other perfectly. It also reflects the monochromatic balance of the inspired collection as well. The tank top is also a high-low; thus, showing just enough skin this summer without revealing too much. Since punk and grungy looks are often darker, it’s important to choose either fully black or mainly black colored tanks.

Since my tank top is mainly black, my black Vans Lo Pros help balance the overall look by maintaining a simple color scheme. The Lo Pros are made to be worn tight to your feet, making your feet look small and slim. These shoes are a must-have for any season since they not only match any jeans or pants, but they also match dresses and skater skirts.

As for makeup, you have to think bold when you think punk. I decided to wear my velvet matte lip pencil from NARS with the NAKED 2 BASICS eyeshadow palette. The key to getting an edgy look is to make sure to stick to a dark, bold color palette and that the products are matted in order to maximize the boldness.
