STYLE GURU STYLE: Print It

This week is all about seeking inspiration from trends created by the top fashion professionals for us fashion aficionados. MaxMara, one of my favorite designers, caught my attention in the spring 2015 ready-to-wear collections by selecting a monochromatic color scheme with subtle hints of a repetitive pattern in many of their styles. Although this particular look differs drastically from combining colors to create, for example, a bright and fantastical bohemian outfit, the simplicity and detail of this look holds just as much boldness and self-expression. Keeping in mind the power and flexibility of a one-color outfit, I drew my inspiration from this very notion of continuing the monochromatic trend and adding a little flare with a printed belt and matching heels. I encourage you to try on a similar style and adopt the mentality of building an outfit with basics and dressing it up with accent pieces following the runway creations of MaxMara.

What makes this outfit and trend even better is how it can easily be put together with a few commonly held pieces found universally in many wardrobes. First, choose a simple summer crop top (it can even have designs or embellishments), and pair it with a summer flare skirt of the same color choice. Since we want to continue using monochromatic colors, use accessories with similar textures or colors to draw the outfit together. I combined a snake-print belt and shoes of the same design to make my outfit stand out. Personally, snake-print has developed into one of my favorite patterns mainly because of the different colors featured, but if it is not your favorite, go with a polka-dot printed scarf and flats or a summer striped tank top and clutch. To complete the look throw on some decorative bangles (think of an Alex and Ani type of accessory) that draws out the various contrasts of the outfit with a textured wristlet, and you are ready to tackle office duties or catch up with friends in a cafe. For a different look you could also replace a solid crop top with one that has a defined pattern and use the colors featured in that pattern as a foundation for selecting the rest of the outfit. Remember to have fun experimenting with different summer patterns to support a one-tone outfit; it’s the perfect season to wear an on-trend look!

Get My Look: 1. Start with a black crop top. 2. Add a high-waisted skirt.  3. Personalize your look by featuring a distinct pattern in your shoes and belt (or with another accessory).
