STYLE GURU STYLE: Planes, Trains and Boat Necks

As we ring in the New Year, we look forward to the future while preserving our past. This idea is exactly what the spring 2016 Milly ready-to-wear collection displayed. This collection puts a spin on many classical styles including the mini skirt, the maxi dress as well as the boat neck. The looks exhibit a contemporary approach to these classic trends through the colors, patterns and structures of the clothing.

The Milly line shows a range of diversity with varying hemlines, color palettes, patterns and necklines. The collection features plunging necklines, geometric patterns, structured garments and a range of colors from pale blue to vivid orange. Looks span from monochromatic and neutral ensembles, to a mix of monochromatic neutrals with patterned pops of color, to a bright color palette filled with patterned and monochromatic outfits. In all, the variety of the line translates well into many spring looks.

To convert this runway show to an everyday outfit, I used elements from many of the looks as well as my own style. I decided to match a gray, monochromatic, fitted boat neck with a neon pink, structured skort with a floral pattern. I wanted my skort to act as the centerpiece of my outfit, while the boat neck added subtle details. I also paired the outfit with a navy floppy hat and pair of navy TOMS shoes. I feel like the hat completed the look and it also looks great whether it’s sunny and warm or if it’s chilly and overcast.

Lastly, I decided to add a little more color to my outfit by using a bright orange lipstick that popped and paired fantastically with the neon pink of the skort!

Get My Look: 1. Monochromatic boat neck. 2. Vibrant skort. 3. Fun, floppy hat.
