Time’s tendency to just fly by fascinates me. I can never come to terms with how seasons end so quickly. With summer coming to a close and with the new semester around the corner, I started looking to the pre-fall 2014 shows for inspiration. Many labels and designers used plaid as the focal trend, and I loved the Elizabeth & James collection’s use of the pattern.
The collection stayed true to the label’s aesthetic: crisp and elegant with a touch of whimsy. With a color palette of soft neutrals, the garments presented nailed the effortlessly chic vibe. The show incorporated a mix of textures into the outfits, pairing the stiff and structured with the sheer and silky.
The use of strategic layering, however, intrigued me the most. One ensemble had a flannel midi dress worn underneath an embellished pencil skirt with a slightly shorter hemline; another had a similarly long flannel buttoned halfway down over a knee-length skirt, topped off by a classic black blazer. These outfits blew my mind because of their unconventional take on layering and because of how they still managed to look amazingly sophisticated.
Attempting to pull off some of the sophistication of the collection in a casual manner, I opted for a pair of short overalls to layer on top of my plaid flannel. As a further nod to the show, I tied a light sweater around my waist, which would prove useful during cooler August nights. To glam up the look a bit, I wore one of my favorite necklaces under the collar of the shirt. As for shoes, I sported some of my go-to loafers.
All this layering has me extremely excited for the fall, but I will definitely miss the carefree attitude that summer allows people to have. I will also miss writing for this weekly column, but I cannot wait to be back next semester with new thoughts on style. I hope that I was able to inspire at least a few Fashionistos and Fashionistas to not shy away from what the fashion industry has to offer. For something that seems so bent on rules, fashion is definitely all about the complete opposite: breaking rules through innovation.
