STYLE GURU STYLE: Plaid Blanket Scarves

Scarves are essential to any Fashionista’s winter wardrobe. Not only do they serve a purpose of keeping warm, but they can also make a statement. Blanket scarves have become very popular in many runway shows and on campus. Burberry Prorsum’s fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection showed a lot of blanket scarves, which are oversized scarves that can be compared to the size of a blanket. This collection had many different types of blanket scarves, some of which included bulky cashmere ones and slim hand painted ones. As shown in this runway show, blanket scarves can be worn in a variety of ways. They can be draped around the neck, wrapped around to keep warm, belted at the waist or worn as shawls.

This show inspired me to purchase my own trendy scarf. I found this blanket scarf at Forever 21. It was relatively easy to find, and they offered it in a variety of colors. I chose a red, black and white plaid one because it could be easily paired with my mostly black wardrobe while adding a pop of color. I love plaid for the winter, and it has become my go-to pattern this year.

I based my whole outfit around the scarf. I put on my favorite pair of leather leggings to add more texture to the look. I wore a plain black sweater so that it would not take away from the main aspect of the outfit—my scarf. I decided to wrap the scarf around my neck in order to keep me warm, but there are many other ways that I could have worn it. I wore my silver Dr. Martens to make the outfit more interesting and add more color.

If you want to stay trendy and warm this winter, try a blanket scarf. They can be used many different ways and are sure to make a statement!
