STYLE GURU STYLE: Piece De Resistance

Look sharp, denim debutantes: Jeremy Scott won’t be the first to tell you “fashion kills.”

Yet if not the first, his voice can shout the loudest. Moschino’s fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection captivated me with the theme of simultaneous train wrecks, renaissance fairs and biker brawls. The other day I was scrolling through runway recaps with ideas short-circuiting. His collection came across like a breath of fresh (smoky, melodramatic-tinged) air.

Leather and denim are two textiles that will never go out of style. The collection features both in a unique manner: high black boots top off shredded blue mini skirts; pops of mustard, pale blue, crimson and pink wink out from behind chains, bows and knots. Scott’s vaguely goth and off-the-wall repertoire of pieces inspired me to put together my look.

I chose this denim dress for its oversized, casual vibe. The dark wash stands out against my skin and helps anchor an otherwise all-black outfit. The collection featured similar dresses, all in various states of disarray, which the outfit hearkens back to.

Models walked in knee-high leather boots. I found my own pair of such “warrior shoes” in my mother’s closet. (Thanks, mom!) They’re a little bit Gwen Stacy and a touch more daring than I’d attempt, pre-collection. I had trouble taking them off at the end of the day, because I fell in love, fast.

To finish things off, I wore a leather vest and a western belt. Both were great bargain finds. I’ll admit to wearing the vest over white T-shirts, statement tanks, denim jackets and pretty much everything else in my closet. If you’re looking for a great wardrobe staple that doesn’t break the bank, look no further. I snagged mine for five dollars at an Aeropostale end-of-the-year sale!

I kept my accessories simple: a black bandana and a tangle of thin silver necklaces. The last pendant has a touch of turquoise in the middle—a nod to my own southwestern-inspired style in the midst of Moschino’s biker-renaissance world.

Get My Look: 1. Western belt. 2. Boots. 3. Vest.
