STYLE GURU STYLE: Perfectly Preppy

If there is one thing I’ve learned from growing up in Boston, it is that the weather in New England can be unpredictable. Luckily, there is one thing you must always do to ensure comfort: layer, layer, layer.

One look I have been completely obsessed with this winter is layering collared shirts with crewneck sweaters. On the days that are too nice to wear a large winter coat, layering can serve as a comfortable, yet fashionable, option.

In this look I am wearing a checkered, light blue button-up underneath a printed, dark blue crewneck sweater. Having a bold, simple graphic draws people in without getting too distracted. The light and dark blues tie in nicely together, without it feeling too matchy-matchy.

For jewelry, I’ve chosen to wear a statement necklace and pearl earrings. The way that the necklace naturally falls ties in the collared shirt and sweater. It hides away the awkward area where the two fabrics meet, replacing it with continuity between the pieces. Adding pearl earrings bring in the timeless preppy look. This specific pair I am wearing, I received from Mirina Collections, but many retailers as well, as high end jewelers, sell identical pairs at all price points.

Instead of carrying around a simple backpack, I chose to use one with a little extra edge. The thin chevron stripes are a trademark of preppy culture. However, the metallic gold bars are what takes this bag and gives it a modern twist.

While preppy attire is not what it was in the early 1910s, these fashions have constantly evolved with its time. Certain trademarks, like collared shirts and pearl earrings, seem to remain constant. Trends come and go, but preppy will always remain.
