STYLE GURU STYLE: Pastel Party

If you weren’t aware already, pastels are a popular summer trend. But why is it so hard to incorporate those colors into our everyday look? When in doubt, I find myself turning toward my comfort colors: black and white. I knew that there must be a way to embrace both.

The Marc by Marc Jacobs spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection perfectly blended the two. Although this brand has now been absorbed into Marc Jacobs, Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier were the designers behind this particular runway show. The models were covered in latex polka-dots, which were accented by hues of pastel. I was easily persuaded to try out this trend for myself.

I decided to focus in on the first look that hit the runway. This look features a dramatic polka-dot skirt paired with a casual T-shirt, both in a pastel yellow color. Because it was such a rainy day, I had to include jeans in the outfit. I chose to wear my black skinny jeans in an effort to replicate the dark leggings the model was wearing.

I incorporated the polka-dot theme in my sheer blouse. This top is great for rainy summer days because the material is not too hot or cold. Because of the print on my shirt, I decided to skip the accessories, but if you want to, I would suggest a pastel colored clutch. This way, you’re not overpowering the print, but you’re keeping the theme of the outfit.

The pastel yellow sandals were my favorite. I’m not normally one to reach for yellow, but after seeing it work flawlessly in this collection, I knew I had to include it in my ensemble somewhere.

The lesson here is to not be afraid to try something new. Even if you’re reluctant to try bold colors, chances are there’s a way to incorporate something you’re comfortable with to ease into the trend!
