STYLE GURU STYLE: Paintings, Prints and Patterns

The spring 2015 alice + olivia line took inspiration from the modern art in Versailles. Designer Stacey Bendet wanted to transform the paintings she saw to print. The line included full skirts, pleated tops, wide-leg trousers, most of which was ‘70s influence. There was also some ‘50s-style tea dresses and beaded gowns. The colors, prints and patterns screamed spring, in that they were termed vibrant and fresh. I decided to take a few notes from this collection and update my spring wardrobe.

I chose an outfit rather risky, in my opinion, with a handful of prints and patterns I took from my closet. Pieces that I would originally wear separately, I chose to wear together. I started off with a black and white, striped maxi skirt that gave me a foundation to work off. The colors of this top remind me so much of spring, I had to wear it. Although a bit loud, I find it to be a good match to a simpler skirt. Pairing this with black heels gave the look cohesion, keeping in mind the mix and match of patterns I had going on. To top it off, I opted for some cat-eye sunnies that brought the ‘50s flare from the collection.

This collection relies on the idea that fashion equals risks, and the best way to do that is with bold, individual pieces paired together. Prints can be a dramatic thing when done wrong. However, being confident in whatever you wear will only radiate to others. When going for that brave risk of stripes with polka-dots, do what feels right.

Get My Look: 1. A simple striped skirt. 2. Some fun cat-eye sunnies. 3. A daring printed top.
