My style is a combination of a lot of things. Professionalism, however, is not exactly one of them. Graphic T-shirts, dingy worn-in flats and increasingly vibrant purple hair hardly fit the ideal profile picture for my newly acquired LinkedIn account. While I love rocking duds from across the decades and dressing to fit my current mood—my future employers might not.
As graduation creeps closer, I can’t help but think that when it comes to professional attire: I have nothing to wear. Now, I’m sure my mom would have choice words on the “nothing to wear” debate, and maybe she has a point. Often it’s not what clothes I’m wearing, but how I choose to style them. There are ways to dress up my current closet, and the DKNY pre-fall 2014 collection gave me some solid inspiration on how to do it.
Most of this collection revolved around the use of a few repeating elements: graphic T-shirts, shirtdresses, black and white color schemes, strappy heels and a reddish-pink lip. Fortunately, this is a pretty basic summary of what I wear every day (excluding the heels, of course). Since graphic T-shirts might not be the greatest thing to wear to an interview, I dropped the graphic and extended the hem with my basic white T-shirt dress. While DKNY highlighted button-down shirtdresses, a T-shirt style is much more my speed.
Following the chic black and white theme, this dress looks great partnered with a solid black blazer. From here, strappy heels can be switched with cutout booties, an edgy necklace adds interest when layered with the basic dress. A reddish-pink lip is the perfect final touch to brighten up the entire ensemble.
Though you’ll never catch me compromising my style for any reason, you will find me tweaking it to fit the necessary occasion. If you can put together a wardrobe that screams your personality, while impressing future employers—you are a true Fashionista. If you can do all of that, and still keep your purple hair—tell me how.
