STYLE GURU STYLE: Navy Baby

I spent my last week of winter break fighting the snow and cold. Some of my favorite ways to combat the elements are to light a candle, brew a cup of coffee, slip on some fuzzy socks and browse the latest runway shows. As I was seeking some beginning of the semester outfit inspiration, I came across the Alexis Mabille pre-fall 2016 collection. The following aspects of this collection immediately stood out to me: a prominent use of chambray, a classic navy and stripe combination and a variety of bold lines. I loved the color scheme of white, gray, navy and black. It was refreshing to see a very monochrome line that distanced itself from exclusively using the color combination of black and white. I decided to take a look through my closet and have a go at creating a look inspired by this collection.

I knew I had to start out with a chambray button-down. I always keep a couple chambray blouses in my closet. It is such a versatile piece that can easily be dressed up or down. I layered a striped henley underneath to bring a subtle pattern into the look. Layering is one of my favorite styles during the winter months. Next, I selected an A-line skirt that I picked up at a rad vintage shop this past summer. The clean lines of this skirt mimic the simplistic shapes seen in some of Alexis Mabille’s looks.

I love having many options when it comes to outerwear. Having several different coats is a practical way to change up any outfit. I selected my gray oversized tie waist coat. This is an incredible piece because of the different shapes it can create. The tie can accentuate the waist, or when it is left open, a waterfall effect is achieved. There’s also the added bonus of bathrobe like comfort (wink, wink.) To bring in the subtle hints of metal seen in Mabille’s collection, I added a simple silver necklace.

This look was so fun to recreate. The nautical undertones were an exciting element of the collection. Next, I would like to change the look up a bit. Perhaps I will substitute the skirt and boots for a pair of high-waisted jeans and sneakers.

Get My Look: 1. A classic chambray blouse. 2. Navy A-line skirt. 3. Any statement coat.
