STYLE GURU STYLE: My Heart Belongs To Yves

My love for Saint Laurent came to my attention years ago when I realized how many looks from the brand, both old and new, I had been pinning on Pinterest. Never before had I found a clothing brand that matched my aesthetic so well. While it was the overall vibe of the brand that caught my eye, the fascinating life and style influence of its founder, Yves Saint Laurent, was the real catalyst of my love for the eponymous clothing brand.

I keep returning to Saint Laurent’s fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection for style inspiration. It is perfection. Each look combines several textures and colors that capture the many pivotal creations Saint Laurent made in his day. The classic women’s suit jacket, introduced into the fashion world by Saint Laurent, is now worn in this collection with only a sheer top. The large fur coats, reminiscent of his massive emerald green fur coat, come in an array of colors as well. His current designers have attentively maintained the soul of his brand.

It is not always easy to manipulate a fall wardrobe into a spring or summer wardrobe but it can be done. This collection has many great textures and silhouettes that work during any season. Fishnets, sheer material, spikes and bold pops of color traverse these seasonal boundaries with ease.

My take on the collection channels more of a relaxed, street style vibe that’s perfect for the spring-to-summer weather transition. I wear a high-neck crop top with cutouts that is inspired by the angular, cutouts in YSL’s leather pants. The necklace resembles similar necklaces worn by the models. My fishnet tights are a main staple in my wardrobe, much like the ripped tights in this collection, which are worn on nearly every model.

Naturally, it is near impossible (and ill-advised) for a broke college student like me to spend thousands on the exquisite pieces Saint Laurent has to offer. But I can still dream of the day I finally make my first YSL purchase, or even better, attend one of their fashion shows. For now, I will continue pinning looks from their shows onto my style board and putting together my own, less-expensive looks inspired by the eternally admirable Yves Saint Laurent.

Get My Look: 1. A high-neck crop top. 2. Mom Jeans. 3. Fishnet tights.
