STYLE GURU STYLE: Monotone

Although it’s July and summer is in full swing, it does not feel like summer at all. The rain and gloom have continued, and there hasn’t been the usual sweltering heat that I’m used to. With the sky washing everything in gray, I’ve found it fitting to wear black and white all summer, occasionally adding a pop of color to take away from the dullness of my outfits.

I took inspiration for this look from J.Crew’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. The collection ranges in colors from bright yellows to dull grays. My favorite look is monotone, with a black and white striped top and black skirt. The model wears a red orange lipstick.  I used this look to shape my own. While my outfit is much more casual and comfortable, looking than J.Crew’s look, my striped top is similar and my black pants go with the monotone color scheme. I chose a flowy, thin top to keep cool. While it is not sweltering outside, it was still pretty warm today! My black pants are a daily essential for me. They’re comfortable yet super versatile. My black Keds slip-ons keep consistent with my black and white theme. My purse, however, breaks from the theme. My lips also break from the color scheme. While they are fairly bold, they aren’t as bold as bright red lipstick. I could honestly wear berry colored lipstick daily. I love the dramatic edge it adds to any look, and it goes with nearly anything I wear (which is mostly neutral colored). I added my white KORS Michael Kors watch (I wear it daily) and a simple silver bracelet, as well as a simple rose gold necklace to add a minimalistic flair to the look.

Get My Look: 1. A gauzy striped top. 2. Black skinnies. 3. Berry lipstick. 4. Black Keds. 5. A minimalistic necklace. 6. A thin silver bracelet.
