STYLE GURU STYLE: Monochrome Season

As my semester here in London comes to a close, I am fighting tears to reflect on some of the style lessons I have learned while across the pond. First things first, the ‘90s will never die…ever. I know it has been said, but I’m really not kidding when I say somehow London girls have taken the ‘90s love to a whole new level. Not only do they kill it in their sneakers and skirts combos, but the overload of girls rocking the layered white shirt with a cami is unbelievable.

The next lesson I have learned from British street style is that you can never have too much of one color. Whether it’s white, blush, gray or black, women in the United Kingdom do not mess around when it comes to their monochrome. Seen on runways such as DKNY spring 2017 ready to wear and every Yeezy show, monochrome is taking over. It is chic and simplistic, but still packs a punch.

Keeping to my NYC style roots, I emptied my mostly-black wardrobe and went to town. I always prefer to mix textures instead of patterns, so I chose a faux fur coat, a lace-up crop top, a black skirt and tights. Since London isn’t too chilly right now, I was able to get away with leaving the coat open, letting the buttons on the skirt and the lace-up top do the talking. Mixing the fur with the denim skirt keeps things interesting, making a statement without being too wild. Beauty-wise, I decided I would not only demonstrate London’s love for all things monochrome, but also their passion for the ‘90s. Space buns, dark lips and a velvet choker come together to turn me into a total Gwen Stefani-wannabe, and I couldn’t be happier about it. On my feet, I combine a pair of lace-up booties with socks adorned with a bow. The bows add a little bit of quirkiness to the booties, which otherwise could make the look feel a little industrial.

Overall, my semester in London has taught me so many invaluable lessons on street style that I cannot wait to take back to Manhattan with me in January. Wishing everyone an incredible winter break and a very happy 2017!
