STYLE GURU STYLE: Monochromatic Flare

This past week, I have been attempting to mentally prepare myself to go back to school. This California girl thinks of only one thing when preparing for the Ohio snow—shopping! I always find I get the best assistance from sales associates when I shop with a purpose and actually appear as though I’m going to buy something. This week, I put together a functional, easy and casual ensemble for my shopping expenditure.

Neil Barrett’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear line was an easy source of inspiration. To the surprise of many, Barrett’s menswear background is successfully incorporated into his nontraditional women’s line. This is where I first spotted the popular tuxedo jacket worn by a woman. Because temperatures are continually dropping, I think it is important to maintain a simple look that is easily layered for extra warmth. The monochromatic spring collection provides plenty of versatility, making it a necessity for any Fashionista/o. I see no problem with pulling ideas for winter as well.

There is something so simple about a graphic shirt; they never go out of style. I didn’t want just any shirt for this look, so I paired a porcupine “free hugs” graphic T-shirt with a printed one button coat (similar to Barrett’s tuxedo jacket) to create a basic yet sassy ensemble. I love these two together because while the shirt may suggest that I just don’t care, the jacket brings it all together. Continuing with the monochromatic pattern, I added a pair of black skinny jeans with platform wedges. On second glance, you’ll notice there is absolutely nothing about this outfit that cannot be easily replicated—the idea was to be able to do my back to school shopping without looking and feeling like an absolute bum. However, I personally cannot wear entirely black and white without feeling incomplete. In order to add the extra bit of flare, I paired my MAC “Vino” lipliner with the “Oh Lady” liquid lipstick (this product was just released) for a true pop of color!

Get My Look: 1. A classic tuxedo blazer. 2. Any graphic T-shirt. 3. Liquid lipstick.
