STYLE GURU STYLE: Modern Midi

As I build up my summer wardrobe for the warm months ahead I find myself frequently being drawn to bold prints and natural colors. While searching Style.com for summer inspiration the alice + olivia spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection caught my eye. This collection is filled with exciting prints, volume and a pleasing balance of bright and natural colors. The element of this line that especially stood out to me was the variation of garment length. The collection showcases many knee to floor length skirts paired with cropped tops. This juxtaposition creates an interesting geometry in each look.

I drew inspiration from the colors and shapes seen in this spring collection, and I created a look of my own. I started by choosing a breezy sage green midi skirt as my statement piece. This season I love the midi skirt trend because of the comfort and style they bring to an outfit. I spend quite a bit of time working during the summer, so I value pieces that are practical for movement without sacrificing style. I made sure to incorporate the fusion of lengths seen in the alice + olivia collection when choosing a top. I paired the midi skirt with a lightweight floral crop top. The natural colors in the floral pattern complement the sage skirt nicely, and pops of bright orange and teal provide dimension.

Next, I focused on footwear. I selected my trusty Steve Madden ankle strap block heel sandals. One of my favorite parts about this ensemble is its versatility. I could easily pair this look with heels or sneakers depending on how dressy or casual I want to be. I accessorized my look with a few simple pieces of jewelry as to not overshadow the garments. I layered two delicate gold necklaces from Bauble Bar, and I added a simple brown leather watch. Finally, I added a small-brim forest green hat, because I just can’t get enough of the current hat trend.

Beauty wise I wanted to keep it fairly simple. While studying the alice + olivia collection on Style.com, I noticed that the model’s hair was styled in a chic slicked back bun. I opted for a style that was less dramatic but just as simple by making a classic braid. I kept my makeup on the subtle side by using natural tones and a soft pink lipstick.

The alice + olivia collection inspired me to play with lengths and patterns. Next time, I would try to add another simple pattern to the mix.
