STYLE GURU STYLE: Modern Day Viking

There is nothing I love more than playing dress up. Ever since I was little, I have always had this sense of defiance that makes me especially choosy in what I want to wear. I’m so stubborn that it could be a blizzard outside, and I would still want to wear a newly purchased romper or sheer top. Luckily for me, when I drew inspiration for my outfit from Anna Sui’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear show, I didn’t have to be picky. Sui says she drew inspiration from viking clothing for this show, and I can’t think of anything more whimsical than a modern day viking. Scrolling through the looks I found myself “oohing,” and “aahing,” more times than I could count. Dyed faux furs, seventies-esque patterns, gorgeous layering, gold face tattoos…I could go on and on. If you find yourself dressing as though the world is your stage, and you love to be a rule-breaker, then this runway show is the perfect inspiration for your next outfit.

While I could probably produce a handful of lovely looks from this runway show, I settled on my favorite look, number seven in the collection. Sui’s show mainly consisted of patterned dresses, which every girl has in her closet. To break down this look, the foundation of the outfit is to identify a color family you like and to stick with it. Then, bold textures should be used to layer. I chose to stick with cooler color pallet and wore a green and white patterned shift dress, black patterned tights and silver boots. To accessorize and add texture, I completed the outfit with gray socks, a silver necklace and an amazingly cozy oversize knitted scarf.

If you feel like playing dress up in real life, why not rock this look? Fun and a bit quirky, being a modern day viking isn’t as crazy as it sounds. This outfit is ideal for a day in the city or going to class. Since a mix of layers and textures are really what give this outfit its quirky vibes, it’s easy to dress this look down by simply shedding a few layers. All it takes to pull off this whimsical look is a little inspiration and imagination.

Get My Look: 1. Long-sleeved shift dress. 2. Oversized, knit scarf. 3. Metallic boots.
