STYLE GURU STYLE: Mixed Prints

Kenzo’s most recent collection for the fall 2015 ready-to-wear season was daring, beautiful and very well styled. My favorite aspect of the collection was the juxtaposition of prints within many of the looks. The mixture of bold stripes and ethereal florals was sheer perfection! I especially loved that nearly every outfit featured layers of structured preppy pieces contrasting with flowing bohemian separates. Think a stiff poncho draped gracefully over a lovely sheer maxi skirt. What makes these unexpected combinations work, you ask? A similar color scheme helps a lot, and working to strike a balance between larger and smaller prints (big stripes and tiny flowers, for example) is a simple way to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe.

Today I decided to really attempt to master this trend with three different prints. I tucked a navy and white striped long sleeve into a pair of high-waisted cropped jeans. A paisley print kimono following the same color scheme made for a great layering piece. My favorite aspect of this outfit, however, is the plaid blanket scarf that I added to break up the blue. It mimics the silhouette of the kimono, but with a bit more structure. The scarf also merges the contrasting preppy and bohemian elements of this outfit. A poppy colored lip adds a nice hint of color.

I really love incorporating prints in my outfits; there are so many unexpected ways you can pair pieces together. To keep everything from being too overpowering, stick to a particular color scheme and silhouette. The resulting look is definitely a bit loud, but makes a powerful and beautiful statement!

Get My Look: 1. An enormous blanket scarf. 2. Some preppy stripes. 3. A gorgeous kimono.
