STYLE GURU STYLE: Minimal Layers

In the fall 2014 ready-to-wear runway presentation for J.Crew, layering sweaters, coats and jackets was really emphasized. The presentation showed multiple layered looks in a variety of colors and patterns. All the looks are very classic and clean while still maintaining J.Crew’s preppy modern image. You can see in the recent runway show, sweaters are layered with button downs and oversized coats with sweaters and large scarves. Minimal layering can be key to staying fashionable but keeping warm at the same time. Walking around Baylor’s campus, I see a lot of students minimally layering their clothes to stay warm but still stay true to their style.

I tried to take this inspiration and translate it into my own outfit. I layered a button down patterned shirt with a cranberry sweater. I paired this look with my favorite pair of skinny jeans and some black booties to top it off. I wanted to look clean and classic. This look can very easily be worn day or night by a simple change of the shoes. During the daytime I would most likely pair it with a simple pair of black flats to be more comfortable for walking around campus to all of my classes. Then for a simple evening look you can just throw on your favorite booties and a coat and you will be ready for a night out!

I have been trying to mimic some of the looks from the fall 2014 J.Crew show as often as possible. I love how the simplicity of their looks makes them appear to be even more expensive than what is listed at retail. Minimal layering is my favorite trend this season, and I can’t wait to try out new and different ways to style it this upcoming semester.

Get My Look: 1. A sweater for layering. 2. A buttoned-down collared shirt. 3. Your favorite pair of booties.
