Even before the day my dear mother first allowed me to pick out my own outfits, I refused to wear anything but the most ostentatious skirt or dress I could find. In fact, I didn’t even start wearing pants until well into elementary school when I realized I couldn’t play during recess in my ruby red slippers and ballet skirts. Although I now prefer black to pink and anything to ruffles, I still wear pretty shoes for fun and would even consider rocking tulle. It came as no surprise when I stumbled upon alice + olivia’s spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection and found myself fixating on the lovely “preppy meets pretty” pairing that captured the very beginnings of my personal style.
The overall color scheme of the collection mostly incorporated nudes, whites and creams with periodic splashes of black, red and green. It was a mixture of these color combinations and aesthetics that led me to the outfit seen above.
The midi skirt is a trend that has emerged in recent seasons by brands that range from Topshop to Lanvin. Modest yet edgy, this style of skirt has a unique vintage feel to it while still looking modern. Although mini skirts were prominent on the alice + olivia runway, it was the bolder tea-length styles that inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and purchase my pleated midi skirt from ASOS. Taking cues from Looks 1 and 5, I kept the outfit crisp and clean by pairing a solid black crop top from Tobi with elegant two-toned Calvin Klein pumps. Always adding an eccentric element, I wore a simple black and gold head chain as my only accessory.
Although this look offers a feminine silhouette, it can easily be dressed down with a graphic T-shirt and Converse. It can be dressed up with an embellished blouse and classic heels, which is a chic alternative to an evening gown or cocktail dress. So venture outside the norm next time you need to dress up and reach for a midi skirt. What you do with it next is up to you!
