STYLE GURU STYLE: Menswear

This just in: Sherlock Holmes and boy scouts were spotted at the Miu Miu pre-fall runway show! Maybe not in the audience, but definitely in the show, as a part of the collection! For this pre-fall collection, Miuccia Prada went for a more boyish and masculine style, infusing inspirations from boy scouts and a particular British detective, with kerchiefs and deerstalker hats, respectively. Prada’s collection isn’t just about knee-high socks and boxy silhouettes, though; mixed in are touches of bright retro prints for a touch of quirky femininity. This is reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s 2012 film Moonrise Kingdom, don’t you think?

Personally, I love the masculine and preppy trend styled on women; it gives off a very cool and classic vibe. When I saw the Miu Miu collection with the gorgeous coats and boyish silhouettes, like this look, it reminded me a bit of my own style. I love pieces like button-down shirts, plaid trousers and tortoise shell glasses. With the collection still fresh in my mind, I dug around my very small college closet and ended up with a lovely trench coat, a sweater and penny loafers, paired with socks that had a quirky and fun pattern.

The key to pulling off menswear (and not completely looking like a boy) is first, to have a clean outfit with a simple silhouette, and second, to have at least one standout piece, like a nice coat, blazer, trousers or even oxford shoes or loafers. Stick to pieces that fit well for your body type that won’t swallow you! Some outfit ideas could be a button-down with loafers or a dress with knee-high socks; and with these dropping temperatures, add a coat and voila! You’ve got yourself a menswear inspired look!

Get My Look: 1. A dark-colored coat. 2. A pair of preppy loafers. 3. A boxy shirt.
