STYLE GURU STYLE: Menswear Mania

Oversized blouses, shirt-dresses and collars—oh my! This spring many designers have re-introduced the menswear trend, which means shopping from your boyfriend’s closet. This just got a little more interesting. Alexander Wang’s spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection was overflowing with a combination of structured menswear items mixed with pleated feminine pieces to create an effortless ensemble for a day at the office. To keep this trend feminine, Wang re-enforced the pale pastel colours and baby doll accents. Pale pink and blue have been recurring colours in the spring/summer palette; not only are they great accents to add to an outfit, they’re also a great accessory colour—nail polish, rings and shoes, you name it!

I am a big fan of Alexander Wang as a whole, but I specifically love this collection because it is for all the ladies out there who are living in a working world but want to look fashionable while they’re busy taking on the world! Of course, use your discretion, because I’m not sure going into the office with an unbuttoned blouse would be the best idea—but hey, TGIF? This collection makes it clear that the matching black and grey pant suit are no more when it comes to chic office wear.

After watching this show, I fell in love with the combination of baby doll shorts and a collared shirt; it’s something I would never think of pairing, but to my surprise, I love the polished-meets-casual vibe. The outfit which I am wearing today highlights the menswear trend, with my own spin on things. I started off with a pair of baby doll shorts which I wanted to make the focal point of the outfit. From there I paired a denim collared button up blouse to keep the outfit casual. To add some dimension to the ensemble, I opted for gold accessories, featuring a gold statement necklace and an assortment of rings. Finally to polish it off, I added a black pair of sandals and a black structured backpack, which ties the whole outfit together. This spring 2014 show has inspired me to pair more feminine pieces with structured items to create a menswear inspired look, perfect for any occasion.

Get My Look: 1. A versatile collared shirt. 2. A fun pair of baby doll shorts. 3. A structured backpack.
