STYLE GURU STYLE: MaxMara’s London Florals

MaxMara is an Italian Fashion House that has been around for over half a century. The Fashion House is known for its luxurious and sophisticated feel. The MaxMara 2016 resort collection was heavily referencing the great city of London, the city in which the collection was debuted. These references are subtle but abundant. First, there is a heavy use of black and grey in the color palette, which could reference the city’s darker, edgier aesthetic due to many factors including the lack of sunny days. To continue referencing London’s cooler weather as well as the many boxing clubs, the Fashion House also added in lots of layers including mink head guards and gloves. Also, the waist was greatly emphasized in mostly high-waisted silhouettes. Additionally, quite a few of the looks also featured convertible collars and buttoned up fronts.

I tried to follow most of the trends fairly closely, but as a Style Guru I made some changes to fit my personal aesthetic. First, MaxMara’s looks were intended to reflect London, which is known to be darker due to the constant rain and fog. Since it’s summertime and I was feeling especially cheerful, I decided to alter the color palette to be brighter and more lighthearted. A lot of the 2016 resort collection’s looks featured a lot of black, which I tend to prefer, but for this beautiful summer day I decided to wear lighter colors with just a touch of black. To keep with the convertible collar and button-up fronts seen in many of the looks, I wore a light blue chambray dress. This dress is sophisticated, but casual. It also features a slightly high-waisted silhouette, which is similar to that of the 2016 resort collection looks.

To add the floral detail and reference some of MaxMara’s darker color palette, I wore a flared, high-waisted black skirt with a colorful floral print underneath the dress, which remained partially unbuttoned. This little detail is a fun and unique way to add a pop of color while not allowing the color to take over the outfit. This also references the Fashion House’s use of layering, while still addressing that it is summertime and too many layers would be hot and uncomfortable. Since it is summer and it is warm, I decided to not wear any sort of fur or faux fur accessories, but I did pair the outfit with a faux leather bag and coordinating leather gladiator sandals. To additionally reference the luxury that this brand stands for, I added in a simple silver and gold bracelet and gold collar necklace to accent the outfit. Finally, to complete the look, I added my signature dark lipstick.

Get My Look: 1. A button-up dress, preferably with a convertible collar. 2. A high-waisted floral skirt. 3. Leather and metal accessories.
