STYLE GURU STYLE: Loose Sleeves

Billowing sleeves flew through Woodstock and graced the arms of our favorite folk singers, and they are now making their debut on high fashion runways across the globe. Oversized sleeves are being seen in both casual outfits and formal gowns. Combining bohemian culture with a sophisticated edge, oversized sleeve styles are a new way to add drama to an ensemble.

After watching the Atelier Versace fall 2015 Couture show, I knew that loose sleeves were no longer reserved for witches and graduation robes. Versace embraced a colorful palette full of solid colors and graphic patterns. Using a mix of textiles with different textures, the collection was able to emulate a desired formal look while embracing the bohemian style of loose sleeves.

One technique used to connect all of the varied outfits seen in this collection was for each model to wear similar accessories. For this look, I decided to try to make my outfit more cohesive with the collection by also wearing a headband. Styling a head band around a ponytail features the headband and also keeps your hair out of your eyes for class.

This look is well suited for a variety of occasions. With the outfit’s formal elements, it can easily be worn to brunch or dinner parties. Additionally, it is a cotton dress so with the right accessories, this look can be worn to class or around campus.

This dress also embraces other trends seen in the Versace collection such as cutouts and floral print. I love mixing floral pieces into my daily wardrobe all year long by combining them with tougher accent pieces to keep my look well rounded. This faux leather vest adds another dimension to the outfit and makes the look more fun and applicable for everyday life. The cutout on the waist is unusual and what attracted me to the dress in the first place. This cutout makes the outfit more fun and flirty instead of just a high fashion look.

Wearing a vest allows you to create almost two completely different looks with a simple accessory. By zipping up the leather vest, the outfit changes and becomes a more polished look. It also covers up the bold cutout on the dress if you need to make the look less revealing.

Especially around Ithaca, I embrace garments that can be worn throughout the seasons. This dress can perfectly adjust to different weather conditions. With the addition of fleece tights, black booties and a thick jacket, this dress can be loved even in the coldest months. I love this look all year long and hope you all do too!
