STYLE GURU STYLE: Leather + Knit

The fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection from Louis Vuitton was stunningly practical, as it mixed casual with formal and leathers with knits. This was Nicolas Ghesquière’s first show for Louis Vuitton after leaving Balenciaga. Many of the looks he created incorporated belted, high-waisted trousers and A-line skirts with conflicting textures. I was immediately inspired by the first look, which consisted of a white knit turtleneck and black leather coat with a caramel collar. Since the start of winter, I’ve developed an obsession for turtlenecks. They’ve become my go-to when it’s cold outside or when I’m too lazy to wear a scarf. I’ve paired them with everything—denim jackets, utility jackets, peacoats, you name it— but I never thought of pairing them with leather jackets. It isn’t your typical combination since leathers are hard and knits are soft.

I decided to try it out today and I loved how the black leather jacket offset the white knit turtleneck. I paired the two with high-waisted black jeans, black suede ankle boots and a black floppy hat. I wanted to continue the color scheme of the leather jacket in order to make the knitwear more prominent because of the differentiation of color and texture from the rest of my ensemble. Overall, this outfit has an edgy and classic aspect, which reflects my personal style.

This fall 2014 show has inspired me to continue mixing and matching colors and textures. The result doesn’t stray too far from my own style due to the contrast in elements, so I plan on incorporating this trend much more in the future!

Get My Look: 1. A leather jacket. 2. A white turtleneck. 3. A black floppy hat.
