STYLE GURU STYLE: Layered Up

There is a singular, essential piece of advice when it comes to surviving a Michigan winter, and I’m going to share it here today: layers. A highly minimalist runway trend heavily utilized in the fashion world, it can be seen most recently in the fall 2016 Sonia by Sonia Rykiel show.

From a practical standpoint, layering up is the most efficient way to stay warm while braving the sub-zero wind chill. From a style standpoint, it’s also the cutest way. This trend can be kept to the basics with neutral solids, brightened up with a pop of color or even taken to a more intricate level with the pairing of bold prints.

For my interpretation of the collection, I decided to showcase my love for layers by combining warm neutrals and an accent of eye-catching color. I paired a comfortable and  vibrant red above-the-knee dress with a cozy cream cardigan to keep myself warm.

As for shoe choice, I went with a pair of knee-high, dark brown boots with cream over-the-knee socks for added coverage. To polish off the look, I chose a dark brown, cashmere, infinity scarf and some earrings.

A brief glimpse at Rykiel’s collection gallery makes it clear that a bold lip was a seasonal favorite in her line. I kept my makeup on trend with a deep terracotta rose lip and a half-up topknot. These simple touches made upping the glam on this winter friendly look effortless, while still tying everything together.
