STYLE GURU STYLE: Kimono Kool

Women look to BCBGMAXAZRIA for simple yet on-trend clothing each season. The spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection was no exception, and it incorporated many trends for the season including their interpretation of the classic Japanese dress, the kimono. The traditional kimono has wide sleeves, drapes away from the body and is tied at the waist with an obi belt. BCBGMAXAZRIA carries these style elements throughout most of the looks in the collection, creating a feminine yet carefree vibe.

Though the collection included mostly pastel shades, my kimono is black, ivory and brown. The large geometric and floral patterns are on-trend for the season and make a bold statement. Since the kimono is an overbearing piece of my outfit because of the silhouette and print, I chose to keep the rest of my outfit simple. The kimono falls to points on either side, which creates a more traditional silhouette but also creates a fuller drape, which led me to pair it with more fitted pants. Keeping the look fairly monochromatic, I wore a black tank top under the kimono. I finished the outfit off with simple black flats.

Since my kimono is silk and darker colors, I chose to dress up the look a little more. The cool thing about kimonos being on-trend is that it is the type of item that can be interpreted in so many different ways to fit anybody’s style. Depending upon the fabric, the print and the color, kimonos can be worn for a variety of occasions, such as for a dressy event, as a casual day-to-day outfit or even as a cover up at the beach. Kimonos come in a variety of silhouettes, or you can change the silhouette yourself with a belt as shown on the runway.

Get My Look: 1. A loose fitting kimono jacket. 2. Slim pants or leggings. 3. A simple tank top.
