STYLE GURU STYLE: Jet Setter

Many of us have hit that midpoint crisis in the semester and it is time to GET OUT (for a little bit). So when I was flipping through the fashion shows on Vogue.com, I was trying to find some travel style inspo. It’s so trendy not to look like a bum at the airport (who knew?). The days of wearing what your parents deemed as “airport” shoes (crocs) are long out the window. But they were right about one thing, layers. It’s inevitable that your airport experience is likely to include hyperventilating and hypothermia in a matter hours. Continuing on scrolling through Vogue.com, I stumbled on the Balenciaga fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection.

First of all, if you don’t know this brand, it’s fun to say. Balenciaga. There’s no denying that. On a clothing level, this line is incredible. With layers on layers and big black sunnies, Balenciaga had me wanting to dive into my closet to find the perfect travel outfit.

Airport lesson number one: shades. Big ones. Catching that red eye flight? Throw on some shades to hide the bags that you didn’t check (the ones under your eyes). Plus, everyone probably thinks you’re famous because there’s no way a regular person would wear bug eye shades like that.

Lesson number two: jackets. You want something that you can park on your seat at the terminal or on the plane for those crazy temperature mood swings airports are so well known for. When it comes to coats, trenches are in friends. While the weather may be heating up, you can shop a variety of fabrics to match the weather. Not traveling until spring? Veer away from the wool and flannel and try a lighter weight material.

Lesson number three: pants that allow some freedom. Leggings are easy but try out a pair of jogger style trousers. Not only do they give you room for a thirty-second dance party when you land, but they’re also comfy enough for when you have to sleep in the airport because your flight is delayed until Monday.

Lesson number four (where I break away from Balenciaga): comfy shoes. I don’t believe in heels at the airport and thanks to Kendall and Gigi, sneakers are chic. Take advantage of that and invest in some all black tennis shoes. And if you go with black tennis shoes, that means black socks to avoid the tacky white strip between your black pants and black shoes. Always try to match your sock color to your shoes to continue the line.

Viola! You’re ready to hit the airport.

Get My Look: 1. A plaid trench. 2. Some trousers. 3. A pair of black sneakers.
