Whether you admit it or not, the jean on jean look never left. Sure, maybe after its shinning moment in the ’80s, it took a small break to allow for the ’90s to have its 15 minutes of fame. Now, in the 2000s, the look is back. What’s great this time around is that the jean look has begun to take on a whole new form. There are no more tough jean shirts accompanied by matching bell-bottoms; now is the time to create a totally new style. Basically, it’s all about being comfortable with who you are and what you wear. This is where the Creatures of Comfort spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection comes in.
The name pretty much speaks for itself. No matter the season, Creatures of Comfort’s designs look like something a high fashion girl would slip into on her day off. Nothing is too tight or constricting, yet all of the clothes hang on their models in flattering ways. Even in ensembles like look three or look 26, where the clothes simply drape over the model, there is still a somewhat quirky elegance to it all. Cotton and jean fabrics are present throughout, and the patterns never get more complicated than a simple dark floral or polka-dots. During the summer, these are the types of clothes you would throw on when it’s too hot to care too much.
Of the entire collection, my favorite ensemble was look one, which was a divine look that embodied the modern, all-jean style. Here, designer Jade Lai kept it loose and flowing like the rest of her collection. The oversized jean shirt is tucked into the front of a pair of matching jean shorts that are cinched in at the model’s waist by a drawstring. This allows for a more flattering shape. All of this was the inspiration for my own outfit. I have never been one to wear all-jean unless either the top or the bottoms are a completely different color, so this was a definite first.
I couldn’t fully commit to going all out denim, so I took some baby steps. My shorts are high-waisted and come up to about my stomach, a bit like the bottoms in look one. Next, I tucked in my favorite jean shirt. This shirt has a light wash and contrasts with the darker blue jean color of the shorts, allowing for a bit of dimension. I kept the rest simple with a nice pair of sandals since the outfit is pretty standout on its own. After wearing this outfit all day, I really began to feel good in it. I think I’ll start pairing my jean pieces together more often.
