STYLE GURU STYLE: It’s All About The Patterns

When the sun comes out, so do the shorts. Coming from Miami, FL, shorts are a year-round trend; however, summer is the prime time to really get creative. Ignore the basic jean shorts and fall in love with comfortable and flowy patterned shorts.

Stripes are life for me; they are by far my favorite pattern. So when I was browsing this spring’s ready-to-wear collections, my heart fluttered at Ralph Lauren’s. This spring’s collection includes their timeless color combination of navy blue and white, as well as more intricate and unique designs like this geometric multicolored pattern. I was inspired by their color combinations, as well as how they elevated stripes into a higher realm of elegance. With the summer weather, shorts were a must, as well as open-toed shoes and a satin camisole. Following Ralph Lauren’s color combination, I also paired my look with a long, tan cardigan and a yellow leather purse. I felt the yellow in the handbag gave a nice pop of color in my neutral nautical look. I also decided to follow that yellow into my hairdo with a gold headband.

Patterns aren’t only achievable through your clothes; you can also create patterns throughout your whole look. When the hot summer weather strikes, your hair becomes an enemy. For long haired gals like myself, hair becomes a blanket of unwanted heat. Add to that the Miami humidity, and it’s any girls’ worst nightmare. So I decided to use my own hair to create a pattern.

A braided low bun perfectly gathers all my hair away from my face and neck, leaving the skin open to breathe and not sweat. The braids and twirls crowning my head also add to the overall summer patterns theme. Finish off the look by tying in Ralph Lauren’s style with a pair of slip-on navy blue wedges.

Get my look: 1. A pair of flowy patterned shorts. 2. A white satin camisole. 3. A tan cardigan.
