If you ask almost any girl at James Madison University what her go-to outfit for the day or night is, it would most likely be high-waisted shorts and a crop top. This lovely pairing can be worn all year long, modified to the weather, of course. This week I was inspired by Diane von Furstenberg’s spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection. She called her show “Oasis,” and described this collection as fun and upbeat. She said, “What I’m hoping is that people feel joie de vivre, happiness and beauty in a world that is so rough, so unpredictable and scary.”
What I loved most about this collection was that, as a college student, I could relate to what the models were wearing. I could especially relate to look 11, a high-waisted skirt with a black crop top and strappy sandals. That is something every girl in college has tried on at one point or another. The prints that this designer chose were on the bohemian side, which I also enjoyed very much.
When looking to recreate this trendy collection, I wanted to put my own spin on one look so I went back to look 14. Like the runway models, I went with a black crop top from Urban Outfitters. Instead of choosing a skirt, I went with high-waisted shorts also from Urban Outfitters. These are more practical for summer because they are easier to wear and are suitable for many summer activities. As for the strappy sandals, I went with a pair of gladiator sandals from ALDO. I accessorized with an orange headband and a pair of round Ray-Ban sunglasses.
For this week, I went with a simple outfit and played it up with accessories to match my style.
