If there’s one trend I’ve been itching to try, it’s the fabulous return of overalls. It’s not often that a childhood wardrobe staple becomes reincarnated as a chic, street style must-have. So when I saw DKNY’s 25th anniversary runway show keeping this one-piece wonder alive, I just had to hunt down a pair of my own. Joan Smalls kicked off the show in overalls styled to urban perfection: paired with a crisp button-down, trench coat and baseball cap. While I don’t think my style is nearly as cool as DKNY’s opening look, I decided to give these nostalgic beauties my best shot.
I went for a pair of light-wash, slightly destructed denim overalls to dive right into the trend. Always putting a feminine spin on my looks, I layered a sheer lace blouse underneath to give the look a comfortable balance of tomboy meets girly girl. I accessorized with a pair of nude and black sandals, a quilted bag and my go-to gold jewelry. I think the key to rocking overalls into your adult life is to think outside the box. Pair these blue jean wonders with unexpected pieces like a sexy pair of heels, bold jewelry or a killer handbag to kick things up a notch.
Thanks to DKNY’s spring 2014 ready-to-wear show, overalls won’t be going anywhere fast. Rock these babies all summer long by switching up how you wear them. Go polished with a button-down blouse and loafers or laid back with a striped T-shirt and Converse. No matter your style, get excited to welcome this time-tested denim piece into your adult wardrobe.
