STYLE GURU STYLE: Going Grunge

As much as I try to change my style on a daily basis, black still makes frequent appearances in my wardrobe. It’s my go-to color whether I choose a black top to match with colorful pants, black boots to contrast with a floral dress or a monochromatic look. Some people may think that black is boring, but Neiman Marcus once said, “Women who wear black lead colorful lives,” and I couldn’t agree more. One thing I love about this color is that it can work for any individual whether they prefer romantic, gothic, bohemian or classic looks or any combination. This week I chose a monochromatic grungy look after taking a peek at Marios Schwab’s fall ’14 ready-to-wear collection.

Schwab described his inspiration partially as an interest in “interrupting” the romanticism in his clothing with elements of realism and this idea was well executed in the show. I noticed some ’90s grunge throwbacks with the choker necklaces and all black ensembles yet at the same time there were elegant dresses and modern silhouettes. I loved the effortlessness of every look and I decided to create an outfit inspired by his use of draped chiffon, as well as the long coat with a short dress combination seen in the show.

The designer had a few LBDs in his collection so I chose to wear an edgy and modern black shift dress with a cool caged top. I admired the styling throughout the presentation from the shoes to the makeup, but I especially liked the choker necklaces which I translated into my look. When I first saw the reemergence of chokers I was skeptical, but they’ve really grown on me (as long as they’re not plastic and rainbow).

Throughout the show Schwab created a beautiful fur coat and a few bomber jackets, but I wanted to try something different. Because the weather allowed for it I chose a sheer trench coat to create an interesting silhouette. The calf-length coat paired with a short dress combination makes my legs look long, especially when worn with a pair of heeled black boots. The chunky heel makes them perfect for walking to class, but the eye-catching details add a lot to the look and keep the grungy vibe.

Get My Look: 1. Choker necklace. 2. Flowy trench coat. 3. Casual black dress.
