STYLE GURU STYLE: Go Big or Go Maxi

Summer seems to be coming a bit early this year. All the extra sunshine calls for our boldest colors and cutest combos; and where I love shorts and romper weather as much as the next Fashionista, it is important to remember that some of the best spring and summer looks come with a little covering up.

On recent runways, Alessandra Rich and Rachel Comey showed off a little less leg and a little more fabric with their spring 2015 ready-to-wear collections. The designs used lace, slits, tiers of fabric and unique color palettes of pastels and bright purples to create perfect summer pieces that we can recreate for our own wardrobes.

I made these looks my own and covered up a bit too. All it took was some simple color-blocking and bohemian details to create something perfect for my style.

My coral maxi skirt crosses in the front, incorporating the slit idea from the designer collections. It cinches to one side where I twisted and tucked in my basic dark gray top. The top creates a nice contrast between the two pieces and also keeps my outfit very lightweight for the warm weather.

I then added a touch of my bohemian style with my jewelry and shoes. My gladiator sandals are neutral but strappy, complementing the maxi skirt and accessories well. The gold accents in my necklace and bracelets complete the look.

So don’t cut yourself short with your style. Maxi skirts call for a little covering up, but make for a perfect summertime piece when done right. Change up your average pair of jean shorts and go bigger. Go maxi.

Get My Look: 1. A bright maxi skirt. 2. A basic top. 3. Gladiator sandals.
