STYLE GURU STYLE: Girls Just Wanna Have Mod

The swinging ’60s brought flower power, free love, great music and trademark fashions that continue to inspire decades later. From boxy silhouettes to raised hemlines and dramatic Twiggy-like eyes, small accents of a groovier time can make any outfit more striking. A classic baby doll dress paired with lots of mascara and a dramatic hat (or even circle shades in a funky color) is a simple ’60s-inspired outfit that is still chic for 21st century New York.

Borrowing from Dior’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection, I opted for a more casual version of an LBD, pairing it with navy booties, a delicate necklace and an Audrey Hepburn floppy hat. On the runway, ’60s influences were paired with a darker colors while also opting for black and navy shades, making the styles more accessible for everyday wear.

The versatility of ’60s style is what most appealed to me. An outfit can be both comfortable and stylish, both au courant and classic. The boxy style of the dress can go with summer flats for warmer months or paired with bright tights, boots and bold eyes to make a statement in the fall and winter.

Living in a city filled with models who look runway ready even in the most casual of outfits can be intimidating. I, unfortunately, don’t roll out of bed looking like a CoverGirl commercial, but with a little effort, I can try to recreate the trends I love from the runway. Even if I am not 100 percent successful in looking like I walked off the catwalk in Paris or Milan in my small frame, fashion is all about gathering inspiration and recreating what we love and incorporating that with our own personality and style. In that case, the definition of perfect is changing daily.

Get My Look: 1. Structured black dress.  2. Floppy hat.  3. Small pendant.
