STYLE GURU STYLE: Girl Of Rock

Rock ‘n’ roll originated in America about 65 years ago, and since then, it has developed and grown to be a huge part of American culture. It started out as a name for a genre of music with the perfect blend of hard hitting beats, intricate guitar solos and raspy voices. However, now it has expanded to meaning so much more. Rock ‘n’ roll is a hectic, nomadic yet thrilling lifestyle. Rock ‘n’ roll is a carefree, rebellious attitude with the need to act tough in person and pour your emotions out into song. Rock ‘n’ roll is the screaming crowds, the talented musicians and the crazy dedicated people who help them along the way.

Designer Jill Stuart found a way to incorporate all of those things into her spring 2014 ready-to-wear runway collection, and created a show that exuded the true essence of rock ‘n’ roll. Her collection was full of monochromatic looks with crop tops, skirts and short dresses. Those looks had a simplicity that contrasted beautifully with the hectic rock star lifestyle yet gave a hint of rebelliousness. She also played with the idea of mixing hard and soft materials to create the perfect balance of a tough but carefree attitude. She then topped off her collection by having an ongoing theme of black nails and smokey eye makeup to add an edge to her looks.

Jill Stuart’s collection inspired me to find my own inner rock star! I started out with a sleeveless crop top but instead of pairing it with a skirt, I paired it with a pair of black shorts because I’m a little obsessed with shorts. I made sure to keep the balance of hard and soft by having faux leather shorts and a very thin mesh top. To add some edge to the look, I chose black nail polish, sunglasses and smokey makeup. I added my own personal flair to the look with pops of color in my lips and my combat boots. With this look, I felt rebellious, strong, carefree and edgy, just the feeling a girl in the world of rock ‘n’ roll experiences every day.

Get My Look: 1. Mesh top. 2. Faux leather shorts. 3. Combat boots.
