STYLE GURU STYLE: Fur-Tastic

New York Fashion Week scattered the runways with the best fashion designers of the world and the greatest circulating fashion trends of the year. As an imperative winter staple, fur has been all over the runways this week, but it’s been a Michael Kors staple for ages. His new fall 2015 lineup landed directly in the epitome of his classically acclaimed signature: all-American opulence that is unfussy, optimistic and audacious. Kors’ dressing equals cross-dressing this coming season, fusing what he calls “opulent restraint.” This is basically spun off the concept of styling opposites together, whether that may be through pattern, fabrics or proportion.

As a zealous fur enthusiast and personal fan of fusing patterns and colors, I was inspired to integrate his adventurous concept into something more wearable for college students. By using elements of color-blocking, playing with proportions and mingling assorted textiles, I was able to transgress his runway ambience into a more practical ensemble. By focusing on texture contrasting, I was able to create a stark difference in pattern. Texture adds a new dimension to breathtaking pieces of artwork and the same cannot be truer for clothing. The refined black fur collar makes an arrant impression that accentuates itself against the overall piece. The knit, marled pattern of the thick moto subtly shifts from a basket weave to a simple striped turtleneck layered beneath. Most prominently, the intermingling of fabrics between cashmere and raylon produced a beautiful, unique texture that created a modernized aura of sophistication. The character of the fabric elevates the appeal of a garment, so I always try to assimilate more unique fibers into my looks.

As for proportions, I decided to factor in some of my winter essentials—a turtleneck and the classic skirt and tights combination. The moto frame of the jacket allows the neck of the turtleneck to peep through, giving the top more breadth and dimension. The skin tight fabric of the turtleneck paired with a flared circle skirt creates a cinching silhouette and drives the spotlight to the legs, which I decided to cover with a pair of diamond studded tights. Of course, color-blocking was an element I had to incorporate, which I did with a pink KORS Michael Kors handbag, providing a pop of color to a muted monochrome outfit and topping off the ultimate look with his personal trademark.

Get My Look: 1. Faux fur collar jacket. 2. Black circle skirt. 3. Color-blocked KORS Michael Kors handbag.
