STYLE GURU STYLE: From Grandma’s Closet

The recent casual snowstorms making a mark on the first couple weeks of spring are causing me to look back at the runway trends of autumn/winter ’16-’17 for outfit inspiration. Who What Wear published a great article last month listing the top nine trends. One was titled, “Granny’s Great Adventure.” This trend was defined as taking eclecticism to the next level by mixing colors and prints of garments with the style you might borrow from your grandmother. A fun assortment of designer sweaters and skirts were sent down the runways at shows including Christopher Kane, Gucci, and Miu Miu.

I unfortunately do not have any clothing from my grandmother in my current closet, so this look was created with simply the elements of the trend in mind. The base of my look is a classic camel and navy stripe sweater dress. A fun striped sweater of normal length would definitely suffice. Next, I layered my classic plaid skirt over the sweater. The thick wool fabric is perfect for staying warm in the winter. I chose a neutral scarf and wrap wool coat since they never go out of style. Lastly, I thought my black loafers would complete the look. Feel free to choose a bolder color or even a pattern for your shoes. This goes for the scarf and coat as well! Your opportunities for pattern pairing are endless. I don’t often play with multiple patterns, so the look is also pretty toned down. However, don’t let that stop you from going big with your patterns!
