STYLE GURU STYLE: Form And Function

Every once in a while, a trend will make its way down the runway and straight to the streets. Athleisure perfectly bridges the gap between couture and everyday life. Many pieces from Tom Ford’s fall 2014 collection could be worn straight off the runway for anything from running errands, to walking to class, to going out to dinner. It symbolizes the interaction of form and function, and emphasizes the need for designers to consider the end consumer and how their looks will be interpreted by their target market.

As a college student, the flexibility that athleisure provides particularly appeals to me. For my own personal aesthetic, I interpret the trend in shades of black, white and gray. Much of my wardrobe is comprised of these colors strategically. When everything matches everything, getting dressed in the morning is made possible by the convenience of limitless options.

Inspired by the neutral color scheme and adaptability of Tom Ford’s fall 2014 collection, I created this athleisure look. I started with a black and white adidas logo T-shirt, and tucked it into a plain black skirt. I supplemented the theme with gray knee socks, reminiscent of high socks typically worn on the basketball court. For warmth, I added an oversized black and white patterned blazer. To continue the adidas theme, I wore my white Superstar sneakers. The high ponytail went with the athletic vibe and kept my hair in check all day despite the rain and wind.

Get My Look: 1. An athletic-themed graphic T-shirt. 2. Your favorite pair of sneakers. 3. An oversized blazer.
