STYLE GURU STYLE: Effortless and Chic

Summer months may mean that us Fashionistas/os are out of school, but that doesn’t exactly translate to zero responsibilities. Whether we’re out interning, taking summer courses or working a summer job; time is never on our side. Luckily for us, one of the most popular trends currently is the off-the-shoulder shirt. I’m grateful that many designers chose to bring back this trend because it’s not only effortless, but it’s chic. Due to the mainstream popularity of this look, it’s very accessible to find. From local boutiques to big department stores, there are various designs and styles to fit any fashion forward gal.

I like to think my style is a good balance of simple, timeless and chic. I try to purchase pieces that I know will stay in style for a while. However, I’ve fallen head over heels for the ‘80s style that I couldn’t resist hauling a mini collection. Fingers crossed that this trend stays in style or if it repeats itself soon after. So what about this look grabbed my attention? I think the design itself is so flattering on many different body shapes. The ruffles and weightless feel gives it a romantic and elegant flare while remaining conservative. Having one’s shoulders slightly bare can also provide a sexy and sophisticated aura, depending how you finish the look.

To draw inspiration from the Balenciaga spring 2016 ready-to-wear show, I paired a simple black off-the-shoulder top with distressed denim shorts. Although this look doesn’t replicate Alexander Wang’s couture line, it still conveys showing skin in the best way. I chose to wear denim shorts to make the look more casual. For accessories, I believe that less is more. That’s why a simple diamond pendant is a perfect piece to not distract from the décolletage area. I also added studs for a little sparkle and Alex and Ani bracelets to highlight some gold touches. To tie back to the Balenciaga show, I wore an Alexander Wang cross-body bag to complete my look.

This look was easy to throw together and perfect for the summer heat. As my go-to outfit, I would wear this look into the city, brunch, or on a casual date. Since the pieces themselves are simple, any Fashionista can make this look their own and look chic doing it!
