STYLE GURU STYLE: Dripping Gold

Style Guru Style

Altuzarra was not the only designer to drape his models in metallics. This was a prevalent trend throughout several of the spring 2014 collections. It brought me back to 1999 when Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century was my fashion idol.

After I watched that movie, I hit up the nearest fabric store with my Mimi and bought all the lustrous spandex they had. I made pillows and an obnoxiously tight skirt. Let’s just say I was not the holographic princess that I had hoped to be, but at the time everyone was too nice to tell me that.

I took a moment to reflect on this shiny resurgence and resisted the urge to relive my days as a chubby tin-man or a Zenon Carr imposter – whatever. I knew that it was probably in my best interest to avoid tightly wrapping my body in cheap shiny fabric ever again. I rolled with the metallic idea, but I changed it up a little to suit my style.

The kimono-like sweater I am wearing in the photo is actually a gem I rescued from the Salvation Army, and it somehow morphed into a sparkly knitted kimono after running it through my sewing machine a couple times. Who knew that a three-dollar shawl could become a functioning article of clothing again? I paired it with a simple white dress from H&M and some pale pink shoes.

While my sweater has a sheen, it is a knit, and I wanted something sleek as well. This is where my accessories come into play. The gold clutch ended up adding a little extra shimmer that pulled out the gold accents in my kimono and retro floral necklace.
