Denim jump suits, denim with gold details, hounds tooth denim, denim jackets; the Balmain spring 2014 collection gave us denim in every way possible. There were tastes of leather and laces throughout the collection as well, but what stood out to me was the variety of ways the collection presented this sometimes boring and overlooked textile, making it fun and fresh for spring/summer!
Drawing inspiration from this collection is easy — just throw on any denim you can find. I’ve heard countless debates on whether or not denim on denim is acceptable or not. But according to me, and the designers over at Balmain, the answer is yes. I wore my distressed denim pencil skirt with a chambray top and white cami underneath, to bring in the glamorously girly hint of lace that the collection had. I had to incorporate the gold chains with my necklace, earrings, my assortment of rings and a hand chain. It could be argued that I over accessorize, but I just can’t help it when it comes to gold accessories. I added a lilac nail to tie in some of the pastel pinks and softer colors that we saw in the collection, and a hot pink lip just for fun!
The trick that I find helpful when doubling up on denim is to mix the washes. If you have a darker washed jean, go with a lighter denim vest or chambray top to give it some balance. I know it may be against some of your fashion rules, but give double denim a chance.
