STYLE GURU STYLE: Double Denim

As a fashion aficionado, I am always up for a good, stimulating style challenge. Well, the denim on denim trend straight out of the ’90s is certainly the match I’ve been looking for. Dubbed, the “Canadian tuxedo,” layering denim has been a huge fashion faux pas since Britney and Justin infamously botched the trend in 2001 showing up to the American Music Awards in matching Canadian tuxedos. However since 2010, denim on denim has slowly been making its way back to being en vogue as celebrities like Alexa Chung, Kate Hudson and Kim Kardashian have all been spotted sporting the look.

Now, even the runway has embraced denim on denim. Designers have taken a once trashy trend and have made it exquisitely classy. The collection that particularly inspired my outfit today is Hood By Air’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection, which brings back ’90s nostalgia with impeccable denim on denim pieces.

What I love about this runway trend is that you can recreate it using clothing you already own. To get the look, I took my favorite denim jacket, an old light blue denim jacket with cable knit sleeves. Underneath, I wore a basic blue crop top. Then, I finished off the outfit with some darker blue mom jeans, another recycled trend from the ’90s making it’s way back into style. Then viola, I have my own denim on denim outfit.

What I found to be the key for pulling off this trend in real life versus the runway is to vary the color of your denim. If you have a light blue denim top, wear darker blue bottoms, and vice versa. It can be a tricky trend to master, but done right it can definitely look effortless and chic. If you too decide to try this look out at home, don’t be afraid to have fun and experiment with it; that’s what fashion’s all about!
