STYLE GURU STYLE: Denim on Denim

When it comes to trends, people often have a difficult time making them their own. Too often do people start to look similar when trends take over and suddenly everyone owns the same clothing. One trend that seems to challenge many is denim on denim. This vintage trend not only reminds me of old pictures of my parents, but also expresses my personal style. My comfy skinny jeans and trusty denim shirt is a match made in heaven. If you can master this trend, you too will find it to be your go-to outfit.

Denim on denim seems to confuse many, but hopefully I can teach you a few tricks to master it and make it your own. My first tip is to choose different shades of denim. Doing this makes sure your outfit does not look bland. Here, I am wearing a light wash, vintage Levi’s button-down passed down to me from my mom. I paired my oversize shirt with a pair of dark wash jeggings. Not only are these pants cute, but very comfortable and trick me into thinking that I am wearing leggings.

My second tip is to vary the fit of your clothing that you are pairing together. For example, if you are wearing a baggier oversize shirt, then wear tight pants to define your body. My last tip is to keep jewelry and shoes minimal. I am wearing my simple everyday jewelry consisting of my gold watch, silver rings, and delicate gold choker. For shoes, I paired my denim outfit with my favorite pair of white Adidas sneakers. Not only are these shoes cute, but they are very comfortable for everyday wear. This outfit could easily be dressed up or down depending on a change of shoes with an addition of a bag and jacket.

To add personal flair, my denim button-down could be exchanged for a simple T-shirt and a jean jacket with detailing. There are so many different types of denim to style and personalize. The options are endless with trends so make sure not to become lost in the crowd. Find a trend you love, make it your own, and hold onto it.
