STYLE GURU STYLE: Denim For Days

Admittedly, I’ve had my fair share of reservations when it comes to the denim on denim trend. This is solely because it reminds me of the many outfits I wore during my kindergarten days. So of course when I saw the Gucci spring 2015 collection, I was hesitant at first to try out the look. However, the ‘70s-inspired series won me over with its assortment of luxe suede, kaleidoscope prints, shaggy furs, and (you guessed it) denim. The line was described as “the love child of Jimi Hendrix and Ali MacGraw;” how could I resist?

In celebration of the spring season, I decided to work with pieces from a lighter color palette. I wore a chambray button-up shirt in order to replicate the military-esque denim jackets featured throughout the show. Chambray is a nice alternative to denim if you’re looking for a lightweight textile that has a similar visual effect. Since the weather is warming up, I opted for a pair of denim high-waisted shorts instead of boyfriend jeans. For shoes, I kept it casual and comfortable with my white Converse high-tops. A pair of cognac leather booties could easily transition this outfit from a day spent running errands to an evening dinner with friends.

To add a bit of my own personal style, I had to pile on the jewelry. Recently, I’ve been obsessed with layering necklaces; the more the better! However, to avoid the possibility of all the chains tangling up with my collared shirt, I chose to go for a less complicated approach. I decided to keep it simple with my Kendra Scott pendant necklace, and focused on stacking my rings instead. I love the bohemian glam look of combining dainty midi rings with large stone rings. If you’re someone who doesn’t like feeling overwhelmed by costume jewelry, this is an easy way to embellish your look in a more subtle manner. For additional accessories, I went with a pair of aviator sunglasses and a leather bag.

Don’t be afraid to try out trends you may usually snub. Give them a chance by modifying them to fit your personal style and you might just be happily surprised!
