STYLE GURU STYLE: Darling in Denim

If someone were to ask me a year ago my thoughts about a denim dress, I probably would not have jumped at the idea, but this is one bold look that has certainly grown on me. Denim has made its way back from the ’70s onto the campuses and runways of 2016. From designers such as Alexander McQueen to Cushnie et Ochs, it is evident that “feminine denim” is a reoccurring trend for spring 2016.

Feminine denim can range anywhere between embroidered jackets to Victorian dresses, and is not limited to bodycon styles. As a girl who is not a huge fan of the traditional pair of blue jeans, this trend offers many more ways to accentuate the curves you want to show off! The easiest and cheapest way may be hanging at the back of your closet.

Using inspiration from the 2016 spring collections, I too aimed to channel the femininity of denim. The look I am wearing today is entitled “Darling in Denim” and works by using the simplest accessories to accentuate the texture and wash of a humble bodycon midi dress. Due to the fact the dress is a dark wash, I used a long cream cardigan to tie at the waist. It is crucial to contrast your wash accordingly. If the dress is a light wash, reach for the darker sweater. This helps to bring variety and depth to your look and avoids washing out your skin tone.

The simplicity of the dress also leaves room for more additive detail through accessories. Since the neckline of the dress is kept modest, it leaves room for a longer, more intricate necklace. Keeping in mind the goal of this look, I felt it was important to go with a piece of jewelry that expressed the dainty, delicate nature of the dress. The simplicity and elegance of my double circle eternity necklace added just the right amount of flare while maintaining the femininity of the look.

Last, I topped my outfit off with a classic pair of boots. I chose to sport my suede boots for a few specific reasons. I was particularly drawn to how the neutral color tones worked to accentuate the blue of the dress, and loved the edge the texture and fringe gave it. The trick to this look was to add enough design in the accessories to make the outfit stand out, but not enough to overtake the statement of the dress.

Get My Look: 1. Sleeveless denim mini dress. 2. Open-front knit cardigan. 3. Double circle dainty necklace. 4. Lever western boots.
