STYLE GURU STYLE: Cut It Out

Structure, cutouts and neutral colors are all aspects of my regular outfits. I was inspired by the Vera Wang spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection. This collection places emphasis on the color black and on showing skin. Sheer tops, crop tops and cutouts are all prominent in Wang’s collection. Dresses and skirts are also present, which is why I chose to style my look with a dress. The looks are very simple, yet complex with harsh lines and structured silhouettes.

Cutouts are most often found on the back or sides of garments. However, Wang focused on cutouts in the front. Inspired by this, I paired my front cutout dress with a cardigan and my favorite Dr. Martens boots. The top of the dress is leather with a zipper that goes to the cutout which starts near the bottom of the ribs and goes above the belly button. The bottom of the dress is army green with zippers on each side. Everyone has at least one “wow” dress, and this is one of mine. It is different from anything that I have ever seen or worn, and the cutout and fabrics will stand out on any occasion.

The black quilt patterned Dr. Martens boots are a staple in my wardrobe. They go with almost any outfit, whether it’s dressy or casual. In this case, the color of the boots and the harsh lines of the pattern play toward Vera Wang’s collection and complement the leather on the dress. I paired the boots with detailed socks to add a slight feminine touch to the dark, neutral colors and intense lines. I also added gold jewelry to contrast the stark black colors.
