STYLE GURU STYLE: Culottes

The month of August always brings around the excitement for fall in me that is way too premature. I’m always ready to pull out my favorite pants, cozy sweaters and darker colored pieces. However, living in Missouri doesn’t exactly allow me to jump into these cold weather trends just yet; it so graciously stays near 90 degrees until at least October. However, as I was scrolling through Vogue’s runway shows, I noticed that this fact was not stopping Olivier Rousteing from showing off dark jewel tones and loose silhouettes in his resort 2017 collection. Looking at this collection really inspired me to try out some looser silhouettes for the end of summer and I knew exactly what piece would help me achieve Balmain’s runway vibe: culottes.

For the outfit I chose to execute this runway trend into everyday life includes the same kind of jewel tones exhibited in the show, along with a looser overall silhouette. My statement piece for the look is definitely the culottes. These have been very popular in the fashion world lately, as loose pants and shapes in general for clothing is replacing skinny jeans and tighter tops. The culottes make it possible to wear a loose pant in the end of this hot summer because it is cropped above the ankle. I decided to then pair a jewel-toned lingerie style top with the culottes to give my look a pop of color. Balmain’s resort 2017 collection sported many of the same tones with black to give the look a dark yet summery feel. To separate the two pieces, I tied a belt similar in color to the top and tied off the look with a pair of structured, pale pink flats to keep it looking neat without distracting from the other pieces in the outfit.

While deciding what to wear for the end of summer, it’s important to remember that you can slowly make your transition from summer to fall with looser silhouettes and darker tones that still allow you to stay cool in the heat. There’s nothing wrong with getting a head start on the next trends!
