STYLE GURU STYLE: Cozy Turtlenecks

If you’re like me and live in a cold weather climate, you may already be tired of winter. The weather here in the Mid-Atlantic is not entirely predictable—the beginning of the week could grace us with springtime temperatures, but there may be four inches of snow by the end! One thing that we can all definitely depend on, however, is the promise of exciting winter runway trends. Elizabeth and James’ 2014 fall ready-to-wear collection featured my current favorite trend: turtleneck sweaters. All of the ensembles in this collection had very clear menswear elements to which I was immediately drawn. The turtlenecks were paired with cropped trouser pants and blazers, creating very masculine silhouettes. Along with the challenge of styling two loose-fitting pieces together, I was also heavily inspired by the neutral color palette seen throughout these looks.

I decided to take up the challenge myself. Instead of reaching for a pair of trusty black skinny jeans as I normally would, I took a risk and chose khaki trousers. These helped keep my look consistent with the slouchy silhouettes in the Elizabeth and James collection. I stayed true to my own personal style by throwing on a faux leather jacket and a pair of black Dr. Martens look-alikes. While the outfit remains quite masculine, these key pieces broke up the boxy look of the sweater and added some shape.

I can’t wait to rock this trend for the remainder of the winter season. The turtleneck sweater is definitely versatile because you can style it accordingly for both casual and fancy events. Most importantly, it will keep you totally warm while walking to class.

Get My Look: 1. Oversized turtleneck sweater. 2. Trouser pant. 3. Faux leather moto jacket.
